Tris got another tattoo, the Abnegation symbol on her shoulder. She also got Erudite articles and throws them into the chasm (what a great way to express your feelings). Then she sees Four.
Tris decides to follow Four to see where he is going, but he knows all along that she was following him ( okay, that's a little strange) and he wants to show her his fear landscape. Four is afraid of heights (so many people are), confinement (claustrophobic, but from childhood punishments?), he doesn't want to kill anyone (that seems reasonable), and his father...Marcus. Four is from Abnegation, his name is Tobias (was not expecting that!), and not all of the Erudite articles were lies, Marcus really did beat Tobias. He only has Four fears (that's why they call him Four).
Four has a hard time in his fear landscape, and Tris helps him through it. "You got me through it."
Four takes Tris down a secret walkway leading down to the chasm. Four finally opens up about his past, he left Abnegation to escape his father (that is so sad). Four also finally admits tht he likes Tris, he tells her to call him Tobias from now on, and then he kisses her (it's about time <3).
The next day the initiates try out the fear landscape with someone else's fears. Tris fails miserably and gets totally reamed out by Tobias (no, I thought thy finally got over this). She gets mad, yells at him, hits him, then runs away (why does she always run away?).

Chapters 22-24
When Tris wakes up, she is in Four's room. She finds that he had beat Drew up, saved her, then put Drew in the hospital (wow, he meant business. No one messes with Tris with him around <3) Her head was throbbing, ribs sore, and was going to have major bruising (ouch, that can't be fun) Four tells Tris that she needs to show some vulnerability around her friends to get their protection, and when she had the chance...ruin the people who attacked her (woah, he's getting a little intense here).
"It's more important for you to be safe than right, for the time being."
That night she stay in Four's room. In the morning she is incredibly stiff, sore, and bruised (sounds like they got her pretty good). When she walks into the dinning hall she keeps her head down and avoids eye contact (taking some of Four's advice and acting vulnerable). The others are absolutely appalled but what happened to her, especially that Al was involved ( well yeah, he was supposed to be her friend!). Drew was in even worse shape than Tris, he was practically all black and blue (now that sounds painful).
Later that day, Four shows them where the final stage of initiation will take place, the fear landscape (even the name sounds terrifying). They will have to face their fears.
Al finds them back in the dorm and tries to apologies, but Tris and the others won't go near him (I wouldn't either, after almost killing Tris).
"Never come near me again...if you do, I swear to God I will kill you."
That night, Tris is oaken up by Christina. "it's Al". As it turns out, Al jumped into the chasm, killing himself (I can't believe Al is dead). Dauntless funerals consist of everyone getting together, drinking, and saying that the person was brave. At this, Tris runs away.
Four finds her alone in a hallway. He warns her that she is being watched (that's not creepy at all) and tells her to be careful. He explains that when he threw the knives, he wasn't taunting her, he was reminding her to be brave and selfless.
"It's when you're acting selflessly that your at your bravest."
They stand in that hallway for a while hugging, Four with his lips against Tris' forehead <3

Chapters 19-21
When Tris gets back to the dorm, she finds Peter reading an Erudite report about her father out loud. Molly had talked to an Erudite reporter and made up stories about Tris, this was her revenge (wow, she stooped really low to get her revenge, attacking Tris' family like that). Then Tris loses it and attacks Molly, but Will pulls her out of the room, screaming.
Tris and her friends go to the pit to try and have a fun evening. tris gets another tattoo, the Dauntless seal and a new shirt that shows her shoulders and eyeliner. In the Pit, they run into Four, who is drunk (that has to be a strange sight). He starts talking to Tris (more like flirting). This was the most relaxed any of them have seen him, he is laughing and carefree. He talks to Tris as a friend (still majorly flirting)
" You look good, Tris." (haha :)
Then he walks away.
Al, slightly jelous, throws her over his shoulder and carries her away.
In Tris' next simulation, she is trapped in a glass box, surrounded by Four, and fellow initiates and friends. The tank begins to fill up with water, she is going to drown (that is horrible, who wants to drown in front of their friends). Soon, the water has filled the box, but she pounds and kicks the glass and breaks it. Then the simulation was over.
When she comes out of the simulation, Four takes her into the hallway...and tells her that he knows she is Divergent (OMG! What will he do? How did he know?). He tells her to be careful, then goes back into the simulation room.
"You manipulated the simulation; you're Divergent. I'll delete the footage, but unless you want to wind up dead at the bottom of the chasm, you'll figure out how to hide it during the simulations!"
That night Tris goes to the net that she fell into on her first day of initiatin and just lies there to think. She begins to realize that she belonged in Dauntless all along. (It's about time she realizes that she belongs here)
"I didn't jump off the roof because I wanted to be like the Dauntless. I jumped off because I already was like them, and I wanted to show myself to them. I wanted to acknowledge a part of myself that Abnegation demanded that I hide."
In the next simulation, Tris has to shoot her family (I would never be able to shoot my family, I care about them too much). It is so horrible because the simulation is the only time that she gets to see them. When she gets back to the dormitory, Eric has the rankings for stage 2 (already?). No one gets cut in this stage. Tris is ranked first, minutes better than any of the others, and once again Peter is second. Peter gets so angry that he attacks her right there in front of everyone, shoving her against the wall (what is wrong with Peter? He needs to control his temper!). Will has to pull him off. Peter convinces everyone that Tris is just playing week, just faking them out.
Once again, Uriah finds Tris alone in the hallway, and invites him to hang out with Marlene and Lynn. Uriah shoots a muffin off of Marlene's head in the training room when Four and so e other Dauntless walk in. As they are leaving, Four tells her ththat she belo gs there and she grabs his hand and runs off (They like each other, it's obvious:)
That night Tris goes to get a drink of water when she is suddenly grabbed from behind, blind folded, gagged, and dragged into the Pit, over the chasm by Peter, Drew...and Al (No, she cant die. I can't believe that Al would betray her like this!). They beat her up and hang her over the chasm (They are so cold and Evil). She is about to be thrown into the chasm...when Four finds them and saves her (Four to the rescue).

Chapter 16-18
When Tris goes back to the dormitory, she finds Al. As they are siting on the bunk talking, Al makes some not so shocking revelations to Tris:
" I feel braver when I'm around you, you know," he says. "Like I could actually fit in here, the same way you do." (aww, that is so sweet)
Then he puts his arm around her...and she leans forward so his arm falls away (awkward, I kind of feel bad for him) and she leaves the room.
At diner, Christina got close to the truth about Tris being Divergent (oh no!). Christina was able to figure out that Tris didn't kill the dog (yikes), but Tris covered it up by saying she got Abnegation but chose Dauntless (good save, Christina can tell when people lie and this was partially the truth).
When they get back to the dorm the rankings for stage 1 are up. Will is ranked 3, Christina is ranked 4, Tris was ranked 5 (yay, beating Molly really helped her!), and Al was ranked 8 ( it will be close for Al, he may not be safe). Molly, unfortunately, is ranked 5, she is safe. Apparently, she was expecting to be ranked higher but Tris beat her. She is furious:
"You are going to pay for this."
But she walks away, a dangling threat (I would rather be attacked right then and there).
Later that night, when everyone is in bed, there is a big thud and then a scream. The lights are turned on and Edward, who beat Peter, is on the floor surrounded by blood with a knife sticking out of his eye (that has to hurt, if he is screaming, I can't even imagine how I would sound). Tris is the only one to help him, while someone is getting help, she tries to comfort him and calm him down so he doesn't make it worse (now that is an ordinary act of bravery). The only people missing are Peter and Drew (they had to have done this, they are desperate if they are willing to do this). Tris is the one to clean up the blood (her Abnegation is showing) and she can feel the blood on her hand even after she washes it off. Edward and Myra both left Dauntless and are now factionless, Peter is now ranked first, and Al is now safe.
Uriah invites Tris to go zip lining with the Dauntless and Dauntless born initiates. They take the train to the Hancock building where they go to the roof, climb in a sling, and zip line off of the building (they have to be insane, I would never be able to do that!). It is such a rush, Tris feels like she is flying (what a rush!). Tris unstraps her self at the bottom and falls into a net of arms . This is when Tris is finally accepted by the others:
"Pretty sure we can't call you 'Stiff' anymore," Shauna says. She nods. "Tris." (yes, she is proving herself to the others!).
In stage 2 of initiation Tris is taken into a room with a reclining metal chair and computers in a corner. She is put into a simulation where she has to face her feeds and control her emotions (i don't think I could handle that very well). The only way for her to get out of it is to calm her heart rate.
In her first simulation, Tris is in a field being attacked by crow (why crows?). She tries to run from them and fight them off but they still claw at her and attack her (that would be horrible, no matter how hard you try to escape, you can't).
When she wakes up, she is hysterical. Four tries to comfort her and calm her down. He tells her that the simulation teaches them how to react in fear. She was only in the simulation for 3 minutes.
"You got out of there 3 times faster than the other initiates. Whatever you are, you're not a failure."

Chapters 13-15
Time to learn how to throw knives! (I would probably accidentally kill someone!) It doesn't help that Eric is in a bad mood from losing capture the flag. Tris carefully watches Four as he throws the knives (watch and learn), she is the first to figure out that it takes patients (patients is a virtue). Al is the only one who hasn't hit the target, and Eric, being in a bad mood and everything, makes him stand in front of the target while Four throws knives at him. Tris tries to stop them, but she only gets herself into trouble, and she bravely takes Al's place in front of the target (There is no way I would let anyone throw knives at me!). Four hits her ear on the last throw, not much, but enough to make it bleed and to make her mad (I would be mad too if I got hit with a knife).
After everyone leaves, Tris starts yelling at Four for stabbing her.
"You know, I'm getting a little tired of waiting for you to catch on!"
"Catch on? Catch on to what? That you wanted to prove to Eric just how tough you are? That you're sadistic, just like he is?"
"I'm not sadistic." ... "If I wanted to hurt you, don't you think I would have already?"
What is he waiting for her to catch onto?
Tris is finally gaining muscle, her pants no longer fit over her leg. She wraps up in a towel and goes to the dorm where Peter, Molly, and Drew are. Peter starts taunting her and won't let her leave, and when Tris tries to run away, he pulls her towel off (Who does he think he is? He is such a jerk! What is wrong with him?) and they start laughing at her.
Tris is out for vengance at the fight that day. She is up against Molly. Molly always goes for the attack rather than defending herself, so Tris is able to find her flaws and she beats Molly. Tris beats her up and Four has to pull her away to make her stop (I think Tris went a little to far, she didn't have to almost kill Molly to get revenge).
"I pull my foot back again, but Four's hands clamp around my arms, and he pulls me away with irresistible force."
On Visiting Day, Tris has little hope that either of her parents will come to see her, but, to her surprise, when she searches the pit, she sees her mother (Yay! Her parents shouldn't hold a grudge against her, they should love her no matter what her choice is). Sadly, her father still feels betrayed and he didn't come to visit her, and neither of them can go to visit Caleb because Abnegation are not allowed on the Erudite premises (that is rediculous).
Somehow, her mother knows exactly where she is going and seems completely at ease in the Dauntless compound (there is something she isn't telling Tris). She also knows a lot about Dauntless initiation and the ranking and that Tris' aptitude test results came back inconclusive. She knows Tris is Divergent (How?). She also tells Tris to find Caleb and tell him to research the simulation serum (why?). Then everything clicks into place.
"She has been to the compound before. She remembered this hallway. She knows the initiation process. My mother was Dauntless."

Chapters 10-12
The next morning, when Tris returns to the dorm from the shower, "stiff" is spray-painted over her entire bed, by Peter (he better watch his back, she will get him sooner or latter). And of course, when they get to the training room, guess who she is paired up to fight against. That's right, Peter (of all people!) To make things worse, neither Al or Christina believes that she even has a chance against him (would it kill them to show a little support!)
Peter tries to taunt her, acting like a cat playing with a mouse before it attacks, he tries to torment her. The only thing Tris can do is to stay on her feet when he attacks. Peter is completely merciless as he beats her up. He enjoys causing her pain. Eventually Four leaves the room and Tris passes out.
She wakes up in the infirmary, full of painkillers. She is pretty beat up, she can't even open one of her eyes. Al stays behind with Tris after Christina and Will leave and tries to make her feel better (he obviously likes her!)
Tris refuses to stay in the infirmary, in her opinion "The only Thing worse than letting Peter put me in the hospital would be letting him put me here overnight. " (I must agree with her on this one. She is showing Peter that he has power over her if she stays.)
Tris can barely move the next morning when she is getting ready to go to the train. She can't bend or breath easily and her eyes are all swollen (That sounds painful, I hope I never have to be in that position). Christina has to help her tie her shoes and Al has to help her onto the train. They are going to the Fence to learn about Dauntless jobs (like guarding the fence, which honestly sounds pretty boring). They have no idea what is beyond the fence, and the strange thing is, it is like it is keeping them in rather than others out (Why?).
The strange thing is, when Tris is out there, she runs into Robert (her friend from Abnegation), who chose Amity. Robert is so surprised to see her, and he is even more surprised by her appearance. Robert seams to think Tris should go back to Abnegation, that Dauntless is to dangerous. Tris sees herself with Amity, she sees that it would be peaceful and happy (That would be so mush easier than fighting for your life and a spot in a faction).
Tris wants her life to mean something though, she wants to make a difference. "The goal of my life isn't just...to be happy." (The worthwhile things aren't always the easiest things to do.)
After her conversation with Robert, Four begins to give her advice. He is beginning to show a softer side, he can be kind or frightening, it's a little confusing. When she brings up the fact that he left during her fight he tells her "It wasn't something I wanted to watch." (I think he is starting to care about her :)
That night, the initiates are woken up by Eric, Four, and other Dauntless. When they get to the train they each grab a gun and a box of paint balls, time for a game of capture the flag! ( that would be so much fun). Four chooses Tris first then Christina. She notices that Four is going after the smaller, faster initiates and Eric is choosing the strongest and most intimidating (Four has more of a strategy while Eric is trying to win through intimidating the others).
"Eric is more ruthless than Four, but Four is smarter."
They hide the flag in Navy Pier, by an old fairground area in a marsh. While everyone else is arguing about who will stay behind and protect the flag and who will go search for the other, Tris goes over to a Ferris Wheel and begins to climb it in search of higher ground (this is a great strategy, and an extremely dangerous and gutsy move) and Four follows her.
They talk about the reason for playing and about Dauntless values. Apparently teamwork used to be a priority but no longer is (why not?). For some reason she is shaking, but it is not the height. (I'm not afraid of heights, but if I was in her position, I would be terrified!)
"Then I realize what it is. It's him. Something about him makes me feels like I'm about to fall. Or turn to liquid. Or burst into flames." (I really think she is starting to like him!)
A few times Tris almost falls off of the ladder, but Four always catches her. Once they finish climbing, they see the lights from the other team, and they know where their flag is. But on the way down, a bar cracks, and Tris is left hanging by her hands. Four turns on the Ferris Wheel and she gets closer and closer to the ground. When she is close enough, she lets go, but almost gets squashed by one of the cars. Four makes sure that she is fine and takes her hand in his :) He helps her to her feet and they go with the others to get the flag. Christina gets the other teams flag and their team wins (that game would be so much fun, except for climbing the Ferris Wheel and almost falling to your death part!).

Four makes sure that she is fine and takes her hand in his :) He helps her to her feet and they go with the others to get the flag. Christina gets the other teams flag and their team wins (that game would be so much fun, except for climbing the Ferris Wheel and almost falling to your death part!).
Chapters 7-9
As soon as the initiates jump off the roof they are split off into 2 groups, Dauntless born and Transfers. Tris, who is a transfer, meets her instructor, who also helped her off the net, Four. Four is described as mysterious with short dark hair and deep blue eyes :) They are shown the Pit, where they will spend their leisure time, which also has a deep rocky chasm (Yikes) with a rapid river at the bottom of it (Double Yikes!). Aparently, every year, there is at least one initiate who ends up at the bottom of the chasm (Why?). The chasm has an important meaning.
"The chasm reminds us that there is a fine line between bravery and idiocy!" Four shout. "A daredevil jump off this ledge will end your life. It has happened before and it will happen again. You've been warned."
It is calm to the left and white and rapid to the right, battling with rocks. It is dangerous and deadly (Jumping into the chasm would definately be considered idiocy, why would you want to do that just to prove that you're brave?). But other than the chasm, there are also shops and a tattoo parlor in the Pit.
As the initiates enter the dinning area, they are met with applause, shouts, and a lot of noise (Extremely different from Abnegation). When Tris sits down, she sees a platter of round pieces of meat between bread (Hamburgers, yum). What Christina finds hilarious, and I must agree, is that Tris has no idea what hamburgers or ketchup are (haha) because she is from Abnegation and they eat plain food. What Tris enjoys is that she is able to openly joke and use sarcasm.
Then in walks Eric, and 18 year old Dauntless leader (he's so young!) with long, greasy black hair and multiple facial piercings. The biggest lesson that they learn in this chapter is that "Age doesn't matter here."
What is learned about Four is that he doesn't want to be a leader, he doesn't want the power that comes with it. Tris believes that "those who want power and get it live in terror of losing it. That's why we have to give power to those who do not want it."
Later that night, when they are taken to the dormitory, Eric anounces that only 10 of the initiates, Dauntless born and transfers, will make it through initiation and become Dauntless (OMG, I would be thinking that I made a mistake choosing Dauntless. Why can only 10 initiates become Dauntless?).
Finally, Training time! The first thing to learn is shooting a gun (I have never shot a gun in my life!). Aparently there are 3 stages to initiation, physical, emotional, and mental. What I find funny is that Peter is practically half asleep when Four is handing out the guns. Four takes the gun, clicks a bullet into the chamber, and holds it to Peters head (haha, he totally deserves that!). Tris can't hit the target so Will tells her that she should have hit the target at least once, then Tris (who is a little POed about Will's comment) shoots and hit the target (finally) and Will says "So you see, I'm right. The stats don't lie" (know-it-all), this makes Tris smile (I see the beginning of a friendship forming!).
After lunch it is time for physical training, and yes, that means fighting (time for some action!). Tris really doesn't have much muscle, she can barely move the punching bag! She will have to use her knees and elbows for the best impact. Four puts his hand on her stomach, telling her where to hold her muscles tight and she practically hypervenalates (sounds like someone has a crush :)
That night, Tris, along with her new friends, go down to the pit. Christina has a blast dressing Tris up, it's like she's a giant doll. Tris finds that with different clothes and a little bit of make up, she can be striking and memorable (she's finally out of the boring Abnegation clothes). And at the tattoo parlor Tris runs into, out of all people, Tori, the woman who told her about being Divergent (to bad Tris doesn't get any clarification about Divergence). Tori absolutely refused to talk about Divergence, but Tris does get a cool new tattoo, 3 flying birds on her collarbone, leading to her heart. "One for each member of the family I left behind." (aaww, what a sweat way to remember them! <3).
The next morning, with some extremely sore muscles (I know the feeling, and trust me, it is not fun), is when the fighting begins. Tris doesn't have anyone to fight, so instead, she watches as people get beat to a pulp. Al and Will have to fight each other and Al wins, Will gets knocked out (Yikes, who would want to fight, especially if you can get knocked unconscious).
What I find interesting are the 2 different definitions of bravery.
Four: : "A brave man acknowledges the strength of others."
Eric: "A brave man never surrenders"
These are completely different sides of one word. I have to agree with Four's definition. There is no bravery is fighting a battle that you can't win, some may even consider it stupidity. To be brave, you must be willing to take a stand for what you believe in, but you also need to realize when you are beat.
Christina has to fight against Molly (a.k.a. The Tank). Christina gets a few good punches in (You Go Girl!) but otherwise she is getting horribly beat up (Ouch). She tries to surrender, but Eric, being as cruel and cold as he is, makes her hang from the railing over the chasm for 5 minutes (what a jerk, he seams intent on destroying as many people as possible). She comes so close to falling, but she survives (Yay!).
